Better Buildings

Redraws Kanto as FireRed-styled exteriors. The landmarks first — eleven Pokémon Centers, eight Poké Marts and all eight gyms, one design per leader's type — and then every ordinary building around them, in a style per town.

What it covers

Landmarks. The Center and the Mart get a glazed shopfront, a sliding door under a canopy and a lit signboard. Each gym is its own building rather than one shape in eight colours: Pewter's crimson-tiled cyclopean quarry hall, Cerulean's slate roof over an aquarium front, Vermilion's transformer deck, Celadon's planted glasshouse, Fuchsia's ridged ceramic roof and timber engawa, Saffron's domed arcade, Cinnabar's volcanic bathhouse, Viridian's hipped terracotta earthworks.

Everything else. Three chassis carry every other house, shop and gate in the region, and each town builds them in its own materials:

town cottages and houses civic buildings
Pallet red or blue shingle over timber board
Viridian green tile over stucco
Pewter charcoal slate over rubble stone terracotta pantile
Cerulean light-teal pantile with red shutters grey metal over off-white waterfront clapboard
Lavender dark slate, lamps lit behind lattice terracotta pantile
Vermilion electric-yellow standing-seam metal over off-white clapboard, with red ring buoys
Celadon plain shingle blue-glazed tile, gilt, roof planters
Fuchsia ribbed ceramic over timber frame, shoji terracotta pantile
Saffron concrete and glass concrete deck, glass curtain, gilt
Cinnabar terracotta pantile

Pallet is the one town whose two houses are told apart: the player's roof is red and the rival's, across the street, is blue. Vanilla builds both from the same blocks, so the mod reads the warp behind each door. the same way it finds the gyms. rather than guessing from the map.

The diorama ships as a family of forks — Battle Art Voxel, DramaticShape, its Dramaless successor and PotatoVoxel — which declare each other as conflicts, so exactly one of them is ever installed. They share the building profile, template vocabulary and module seam this integration is written against, so the integration applies identically whichever one the player has, and none of them is edited.

Companion terrain mod

Better Buildings 1.8.0 and newer also own one dormant atlas row for Better Paths and Grass. The companion activates its original pale-mint path, muted-lawn, route-grass and encounter-grass tiles; Better Buildings by itself places none of them. Keeping both art sets in this one combined OVERWORLD atlas lets the two graphics mods remain visible together instead of competing to override the same generated image.

Still vanilla

  • Silph Co, the Pokémon Tower and Pewter's Museum frontage — each is a chassis of its own and wants its own drawing rather than a kit module.
  • Indigo Plateau's Center, which is not an OVERWORLD building at all.
