Relicensing Brain Shell: Moving from MIT to AGPLv3 #90

Description

@Brainitech

Hey everyone! First off, a massive thank you to all of you who have contributed to Brain Shell so far. Building this project together has been a great experience, and I really appreciate the time you've put in.

As the project grows, I've been thinking a lot about the long-term health of our codebase. Right now, we're using the MIT License. While it's great for getting things off the ground, it leaves a pretty big loophole: Parts or the entire Project used in another project and being proprietary, which goes against one of the goals of this project.

To protect our work and guarantee that Brain Shell stays completely open, I am proposing we switch the license to the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (AGPLv3).

Why AGPLv3?

It’s essentially the strongest "copyleft" license out there, designed for modern development. Moving to AGPLv3 ensures that:

  • The code stays free: Anyone who modifies and distributes our work has to share their changes under the exact same open license.
  • The cloud loophole is closed: If an entity modifies Brain_Shell and provides it as a remote/network service, they are legally required to share their source code with the users interacting with it.
  • The community wins: It guarantees that any downstream bug fixes or cool enhancements get fed right back into the open-source ecosystem, rather than being locked away in a proprietary backend.

Action Required: Your Consent

Because you have previously committed code to this repository under the MIT license, I do not own your copyright. I need your explicit permission to re-license your specific contributions to AGPLv3.

Could you please reply directly to this issue with ta similar statement?

"I {Username} consent to re-licensing my prior contributions to this repository under the AGPLv3."

Roll Call

Pinging everyone who has landed a commit to get the official sign-offs:

Once everyone gives the green light, I'll open a PR to update the LICENSE file and source headers. Thanks again for your continued support and for helping build this project!
