Thanks for the suggestion, @SettingDust 🙏 Reasonable gap. Most of the data already exists in the graph (per file Function, Class, and Method nodes with start_line and end_line); what's missing is a single tool that returns a file's symbol outline without reading the whole file. Today the closest path is search_graph with a file_pattern plus get_code_snippet, which works but isn't one call.

A get_file_outline(path) returning the nested symbol tree (with line ranges and signatures) is a clean addition, and cheap since it's just a scoped query over existing nodes. Thanks for the aft reference!

Shipped on main as get_file_outline — merged in #1868, 641c71f53cac2e90a328c823d06e502921e8077d.

It answers exactly the problem you described: a bounded outline of a file's definitions — name, label, qualified name and line range — without reading the file itself. It is available in the analysis and scout tool profiles.

Bounds, so the behaviour is predictable rather than surprising: at most 200 rows, 16 labels, and 256 KiB of text per call; exceeding the text budget returns a limit signal rather than a silently truncated answer.
