pack-smoke: the tarball size cap is reached (main at 14.63 of 14.68 MB)

scripts/pack-smoke.ts caps the tarball at MAX_UNPACKED_BYTES = 14 * 1024 * 1024 (14,680,064 bytes), set from the 1.0.0-alpha.8 tarball (~11.4 MB) plus ~25% headroom.

Measured on 2026-10-02 with npm pack --dry-run --json after npm run build:

• origin/main at 4a612be ([N15] Semantic recall: an embedding provider and a SQLite vector memory #314): 14,634,428 bytes unpacked, 850 entries: 45 KB under the cap.
• N4 ([N4] Permission modes: plan, acceptEdits and dontAsk, switchable mid-session #215, PR [N4] Permission modes: plan, acceptEdits and dontAsk, switchable mid-session #315) on top of it: 14,732,295 bytes, 856 entries: over the cap by 52 KB, so pack-smoke (a CI job) fails. The growth is the feature itself: ~41 KB of source maps, ~21 KB of JS (ESM + CJS), ~8 KB of .d.ts, ~17 KB of shipped src/, ~10 KB of docs.

Where the bytes are: source maps are ~6.9 MB (47%), shipped src/**/*.ts ~2.3 MB, dist JS ~2.4 MB, .d.ts ~1.3 MB, docs/ + llms*.txt ~1.4 MB.

PR #315 raises the cap to 16 MiB so it can merge (stated in that PR). Open question for the owner: keep growing the cap, or shrink the package (for example ship maps without sourcesContent, since src/ is shipped too, or stop shipping one of them). Not changed in #315.

Also near their caps after N4: 856 of 900 entries, 3.8 MB of 4 MiB packed (npm run pack-smoke on lou-n4-permission-modes, 2026-10-02). Not changed.

Note for the size decision: #323 added replay cassettes under src/**/__cassettes__/ (channels, web-fetch), about 13 KB, which ship in the tarball today. Excluding __cassettes__/__fixtures__ from files is part of the same owner decision.

N9b (#247, PR #332) raised the pack-smoke packed cap from 4 to 4.5 MiB: the N9b branch measured 4,225,563 bytes packed (31 KB over 4 MiB); after syncing with main it is 4.1 MB packed / 14.9 MB unpacked / 871 entries. Same open question as above (keep raising caps, or shrink the package, e.g. maps without sourcesContent). (Claude Opus 5.5, 2026-10-03)
