The first layout put the chart in a flow of equal columns, so the thing you look at first was the size of a checkbox, and the settings that you touch once and then leave alone for months took up a full-height column beside it. ONE CHART, NOT TWO OR THREE Everything the machine actually reads goes into a single time chart: temperatures, the fan in percent, its speed, the watts and the voltages of the last five minutes. One on purpose -- with two or three you would be switching between them constantly, and the things you want to compare would land on different screens. Two intermediate designs were tried and dropped. A second chart with temperature on the horizontal axis for the curve meant two charts to watch and the curve reduced to half of what it is. Plotting every sample against the controlling temperature -- a phase plot -- put the curve and the readings on genuinely the same axes, but on an idle machine the temperature does not move, so everything piles into a single strip and there is nothing to read. So the curve lives INSIDE the chart, as a small inset in the top-right corner with its own axes and its draggable points. It covers a corner; that is the price, and there is a button to fold it away. FIVE UNITS ON ONE VERTICAL AXIS Degrees, percent, rpm, watts and volts do not share a scale. Each series is mapped to its own 0-100 range and the real number is read off its tile. The ranges are fixed where the span is known, because a scale that chases the data turns half a revolution of noise into a rollercoaster. Voltages are the exception and are drawn around their own resting value: on a 0-14 V axis they would all sit on top of each other and a five percent sag -- the symptom that matters -- would be a flat line. THE VALUES SIT AROUND THE CHART Four tiles above it -- controlling temperature, fan, speed, watts -- and the rest down its right side. Each tile is its line: click to show or hide it, double-click to rename it. The tiles ARE the legend. Before there was a legend under the chart AND a section with the same numbers in the column: two lists of the same thing, which is exactly the clutter this application exists to avoid. The legend was also a real bug, not just noise. It was one horizontal row with a checkbox per series, and with sixteen series it declared a minimum width of 3215 pixels -- wider than the screen. The visible symptom was not a squashed legend: it was A WINDOW THAT COULD NOT BE RESIZED HORIZONTALLY, which from the window itself is unexplainable. PANELS THAT OPEN WHEN NEEDED Source, lead and safety are now three buttons that open a panel each, rather than three permanent boxes. Not modal, so you can adjust the lead and watch the chart answer. The contents are built once and live on while the panel is closed, so half-typed values survive and the updater does not have to know whether anyone is looking. Menu entries are one word where one word will do: Source, Lead, Safety, Minimum, Emergency, Pre-cool, Games, Control, Use. DEAD CHANNELS DISAPPEAR, BUT STAY WATCHED The chip declares eight fan channels and one exists; the other seven are called "System Fan #1..#6" and read zero forever. They filled the legend with identical useless entries. Removing whatever reads zero right now would be wrong -- a stopped fan reads zero and so does an empty header. The rule is: keep a channel that has been alive at least once since the machine was switched on. An empty header never appears; a fan plugged in tomorrow appears within a second of turning, with no reboot and nothing to configure. The list lives in memory and is cleared at power-off, which is the right lifetime: that is when cables change. The refresh interval is selectable (1, 2 or 5 seconds). The daemon samples once a second regardless; this is the window's rhythm, and slowing it down matters on a loaded machine, where redrawing twelve lines is paid for in frames.
