Add the option to rename sessions manually, like with /rename in the right session or through opencode session rename (new name) (session id)

It has been supported. You can tpye '/rename' in the session.

I looked for this a lot on the gui myself. There's a hamburger menu icon next to the circular "context" icon. "rename" is there.

While this feature has been in there a while, can we modify it so that when you do /rename and get the popup you have an empty blank for the name instead of having to backspace the existing New Session timestamp one?

+1 — I'd find this useful for organizing sessions by project task (e.g. fix-auth-timeout or refactor-db-schema). The auto-generated names from the first prompt aren't descriptive enough when juggling multiple sessions. A /rename in TUI and opencode session rename <id> <name> in CLI would help a lot.

Adding a use case: voice/speech-to-text users suffer most from this missing feature. Dictated first messages are often garbled (e.g. "eck is presert is cicsco-cloud" instead of "check opencode preset is cisco-cloud"), making session titles useless for future reference.

A /title slash command + plugin hook (session.title.update) would also enable plugins like oh-my-opencode-slim to auto-suggest better titles based on conversation content after the AI understands the actual intent.

Adding my use case: I have sessions with 200+ messages doing complex multi-step work (UI polish, bug fixes, markdown rendering for a survey app). After a few days, the session list is just opaque IDs — I waste time opening each one to figure out what it was about. A /rename slash command or session rename <id> <name> CLI command would make session recovery after restart much more practical.

Throwing another use case in: as someone who forks a lot, I am tired tired tired tired tired of having session name blah blah blah - #123. This is intolerable. And I don't want to rename these all by hand.

This! /rename exists, but the lack of a plugin hook is absolutely bonkers wild. I direly need a plugin hook. This! Please. Please please please. Please let us get our agency on controlling the most visible thing of all.

Just adding my use case: in the TUI the current session cannot be renamed at all (no /rename command, and the header rename is not available there), and opencode session only supports list/delete. A /rename slash command or opencode session rename <id> <name> would cover both the interactive and scripted flows. Thanks!

I don't like the approach to create a new session and then to rename it. I often forget to rename session and as a result I lose the context.

So, in my opinion, when a new session is being created a text field with the default "New session" value should appear, either you click enter and keep the default name, or you type your custom name. Along with the custom name the timestamp also needs to be applied when the session is being created.

Same in the Desktop app. It is very annoying that I have to remember to rename the session after it's been created. :-(

I vote for opencode session rename <id> <name> I think this is absolutely necessary to organize better the work and simply "tell any model to rename current session" not just being so lazy of doing it by myself but specially when you're running opencode inside tmux or herdr and want to rename both tmux/herdr tabs and opencode session at once, just as claude code does it

As a temporary workaround, the attached export-ai-sessions.sh script can rename an OpenCode session directly in the local SQLite store (as well as export opencode/claude sessions):

Steps:

1. Find the ID of the active, top-level OpenCode session.
2. Run the command above with the desired title.
3. The script validates the session ID, rejects invalid titles, waits up to five seconds for the SQLite lock, and updates the title in a transaction.
   Important: run this command from the active session itself. Do not delegate it to a subagent, because OpenCode creates a separate child session for that subagent; renaming that child changes the wrong session.
   A native CLI command such as opencode session rename <title> would make this workflow supported and remove the need to update the local store directly.
