fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything - #99
fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything#99hyperpolymath wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
MEASURED 2026-08-27: this gate's pattern caught 0 OF 6 invisible-character test
cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi
override or word joiner.
ROOT CAUSE: the pattern used UTF-8 BYTE sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P
matches CHARACTERS. Bytes c2 a0 are ONE character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for TWO
characters, U+00C2 then U+00A0, which is never present.
grep -P '\xc2\xa0' -> miss
grep -P '\x{a0}' -> MATCH
Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings.
FIXED: codepoint escapes; C0 control characters \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F
added (TAB/LF/CR excluded); and grep -a, without which grep skips any NUL-bearing
file as binary.
The C0 range matters: a stray BACKSPACE byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran, and this linter called it clean.
Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 2 file(s) here.
VERIFIED: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real
NBSP before the change was kept.

Pull Request Overview
The pull request currently introduces a critical regression that will cause the CI gate to fail for all files in the repository. While the PR correctly defines the new Unicode-based regex patterns, it fails to pass the $PATTERNS variable to the grep execution, resulting in an empty string match ("") against every file.
Additionally, several key acceptance criteria regarding the detection of specific characters (like Non-Breaking Spaces and C0 control characters) are not yet verified or correctly implemented in the execution step. These issues must be addressed before merging to ensure the 'invisible-character gate' functions as intended.
About this PR
- The implementation contains a critical regression: the
$PATTERNSvariable defined on line 122 is not utilized in thegrepcommand on line 133 across multiple workflow files. This will cause the CI gate to produce false positives for every scanned file.
Test suggestions
- Detect Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) using codepoint escape
- Detect C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)
- Correctly use the $PATTERNS variable in the grep execution
- Include -a flag to prevent grep from skipping binary-looking files
Prompt proposal for missing tests
Consider implementing these tests if applicable:
1. Detect Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) using codepoint escape
2. Detect C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)
3. Correctly use the $PATTERNS variable in the grep execution

🔴 HIGH RISK
The grep command is searching for an empty string instead of the intended patterns. This will cause the gate to flag every source file as a violation.

🔴 HIGH RISK
The grep command is searching for an empty string, which matches every line in every file and ignores the defined $PATTERNS variable. It should be updated to use the variable; the recursive -r flag is redundant when used with find -exec on individual files.

Add the leading-BOM check to both workflow copies.
