Mulga

Open source AWS-compatible platform for secure edge deployments. Run EC2, VPC, S3, and EBS-like services on bare metal with full control.

Mulga

Bring the cloud back to you

Mulga builds Spinifex: an open-source, AWS-compatible cloud that runs on infrastructure you control.

Your software was built for AWS. That doesn't mean you're stuck in AWS. Spinifex runs the services your code already calls — EC2, S3, EBS, VPC, IAM, EKS — on your own racks, on a partner Neocloud, or on a box at the edge with no link home. Same APIs, same SDKs, same Terraform. Repoint, don't re-platform.

What we do

Most "AWS alternatives" wrap an API and call it a cloud. We built the parts that are actually hard — the distributed object store, the block layer, the compute fabric — because that depth is the only reason your software runs unchanged instead of rewritten. Real VMs on QEMU with direct hardware access, not emulation. No phone-home, no external control plane: pull the cable and it keeps running. Open core under AGPL-3.0, auditable, and yours to keep.

Who we build it for

Enterprises whose AWS bill outruns usage and whose regulators keep asking where the data sits. AI companies who want the H100s and B200s sitting on Neoclouds at half the price, without re-platforming the pipeline that expects AWS. Defence teams running mission software where AWS isn't — air-gapped, contested, disconnected — so inference doesn't stop when the link does. And the Neoclouds themselves, who have the iron and the prices but need the AWS-compatible front door those workloads land on.

One platform, three deployment shapes: Neocloud, on-premise, edge.

The stack

Spinifex is EC2-compatible compute on QEMU. Viperblock is EBS-compatible block storage with WAL-backed volumes, replication, and snapshots. Predastore is S3-compatible object storage with Reed-Solomon erasure coding across nodes. Alongside them: Goanna for CloudWatch-compatible observability, Northstar for DNS, Bluebottle for shared utilities.

Install on your own hardware with curl -fsSL https://install.mulgadc.com | bash, or skip it and take a hosted sandbox for a spin in under a minute.

Who we are

A small, distributed team of infrastructure engineers with deep backgrounds in distributed systems, virtualisation, networking, and storage, working with partners across industry, government, and defence. Company HQ in Austin, Texas; engineering HQ on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. We build in the open, because the platform you bet on shouldn't need a vendor's permission to exist.

Join us

We're hiring senior engineers who have shipped serious distributed systems, built cloud control planes, or done deep work in storage, networking, and virtualisation. Issues and pull requests are welcome on every repo above — the ones that catch an API behaving differently from AWS are the most useful reports we get.

Spinifex – Open source AWS-compatible platform for secure edge deployments. Run EC2, VPC, S3, and EBS-like services on bare metal with full control. Built for environments where running in the cloud isn’t an option. Whether you’re deploying to edge sites, private data-centers, or operating in low-connectivity or highly contested environments.
