What is this?

Overdraft is a simple personal time tracker for people who want to see where their day really went without filling in timesheets. You press play on a task and the timer runs on the server, not in your browser tab: close the tab and the time keeps counting. Pick another task and the previous one stops by itself. In the evening you look at a day strip, a chart by group, or a year of weeks.

Looking for a time tracker where only one task runs at a time? A time tracker with a daily limit per task, for example two hours of games? A time tracker where tracked time can't be edited, so the numbers stay honest? A time budget app that treats your 24 hours like money and counts sleep as part of it? A simple daily planner that only has today and tomorrow instead of ten-year plans? That is what Overdraft does.

The idea: you have 24 hours a day and you can't get more. You can choose what they go into, and Overdraft shows what you actually chose.

Use cases:

  • Track how much time goes into work, study, family, hobbies and entertainment, using a few broad groups
  • Keep a daily limit on a distraction (games, video, social media) and see how far over you went
  • See short breaks add up: a work block cut by five-minute slices of YouTube or TikTok shows on the day strip
  • Plan only today and tomorrow, so the list stays short and honest
  • Watch a long-term trend: a habit slowly sliding down over weeks, or a new one growing
  • Track sleep as part of the daily budget
  • Export tracked time to CSV for your own reports and spreadsheets

How it works

  1. Open an account. Add a task and pick a group.
  2. Make an entry. Press play. One task runs at a time, the timer counts for you.
  3. Set a limit. Plan today and tomorrow, and set a daily cap on a task if you want an honest limit.
  4. Check the balance. See where the day went, by hour and by group, and compare days, weeks and months.

Features

  • One running task. Press play on another task and the current one stops and returns to the list it came from.
  • Four fixed lists. Backlog, Progress, Today, Tomorrow. Tomorrow becomes Today by the calendar, and what was not done yesterday goes back to Backlog. No custom lists, no long-term projects.
  • Groups. Up to 10 colored groups. Rename, merge, change the color, archive and restore. A new group is created together with the task that uses it.
  • Daily caps. Set a cap per task, see "45m of 1h", then a red "over" when you cross it. Optional push notification.
  • Sleep tracking. One button starts and ends sleep. Sleep sits on the day strip and counts in your 24 hours, but not in the work stats.
  • Day strip. Timeline view (sessions by hour, zoom) and Breakdown view (the whole day as one bar: missed, sleep, groups, what is left).
  • Stats. Week, month, year and all time as stacked bars, lines or an activity calendar. Hide groups, filter tasks, compare any two days side by side.
  • Export. CSV of what the chart shows: range, filters and hidden groups.
  • Phone first-class. Swipe between lists, a bar with the running task on every page, swipe to stop, installable, works offline for reading.
  • Chrome extension. Start and stop tasks and sleep from the toolbar, with the running time on the icon. See below.
  • Languages. English, Russian, Ukrainian.

Chrome extension

A small popup in the toolbar: pick the boards (Backlog, Today, Tomorrow), tap a task to start it (the running one is sent back to its list by itself) or tap the running one to stop it. The running task is always on top, with today's time and the daily cap. The toolbar icon shows today's time of the running task: green, red once the cap is over, a light-blue "zz" while you sleep. Going to sleep and waking up ask for the same confirmations as in the app.

Add it from the Chrome Web Store (free, uses your Overdraft account). It talks only to app.overdraft.nomad4.tech; see the privacy policy.

The comparison is about the main idea of each kind of tool; these products have many features and change over time.

FAQ

Is there a time tracker where only one task can run at a time? Yes. Overdraft keeps exactly one running task. Starting another stops the current one and returns it to its list.

Is there a time tracker with a daily limit per task? Yes. Set a daily cap on a task (for example 1 hour for games). You see how much is left, and a red "over" when you cross it. An optional push notification tells you.

Can I edit tracked time? No, on purpose. Start and stop times are stamped by the server, so the numbers stay honest. Archive or delete a task if it was a mistake.

Does the timer keep running if I close the tab? Yes. The timer lives on the server. A notification can remind you if a timer is left running for hours.

How do I track sleep? Press Sleep before bed and Wake up in the morning (you can adjust the wake-up time). Sleep shows on the day strip and in your 24 hours, but is not mixed into the work stats.

Can I plan a week or a month ahead? No. There are only Backlog, Today and Tomorrow. Short planning is part of the idea: a short list makes you choose.

What are groups? A few broad categories like work, family, entertainment, self-mastery. Up to 10, each with a color. Stats are by group, so you don't need to split life into tiny actions.

Can I see how my time changed over weeks and months? Yes. Stats show week, month, year and all time as bars, lines and an activity calendar. You can compare any two days side by side.

Can I export my data? Yes. Export CSV gives what the chart shows: one row per task, one column per day, week or month, in minutes.

Does it work on a phone? Yes. Open the web app and install it to the home screen. Lists swipe, a bar shows the running task, notifications work in the installed app, and reading works offline.

Is it free? Do I need an account? It is free. Sign-in is with a Google account, there is no separate registration.

What data do you store? Your Google account email and name, your tasks, groups and tracked sessions. The email, name, task names and descriptions, group names, feedback and push keys are stored encrypted in the database (AES-256-GCM, the key is kept separately from the database). Overdraft does not read your screen, other apps or your browsing.

Does it track apps and websites automatically? Not yet. A browser extension that tracks time into a group automatically is planned.

Roadmap

Plans, not dates:

  • Auto-tracking by site: a browser extension that records time into a group by itself and shows short runs on the day strip
  • Android app with widgets and a watch app
  • Linux desktop app
  • Calendar and integrations

Tech

Built with Java 21 and Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, a React and TypeScript single-page app, installable as a PWA.
