The OSM Sandbox is a collection of tools for deploying a standalone copy of the OpenStreetMap software stack. Each Sandbox is its own separate database, but supports the same tools and workflows you know from contributing to OSM. The goal is to create safe learning environments for novice mappers to learn to contribute, to support crowdsourcing of data that does not belong in OSM itself, and enable the collection and maintenance of datasets that have different license requirements than OSM (for example CC0).
Development of the OSM Sandbox is supported by OpenStreetMap US.
Warning
OSM US is retiring the current version of our sandbox platform for now. We plan to build a new version of this toolset with a particular focus on supporting TeachOSM, TeenMaptivists, and other initiatives to use OSM in educational settings. If want to get involved with that process, please consider joining the Education Working Group.
