OpenUTV 2026.11

A small macOS release that follows up on the startup failure fixed in 2026.10. Windows and Linux are unchanged apart from being rebuilt.

To upgrade on macOS:

brew update && brew upgrade --cask utv

macOS

  • UTV now tells you when its Homebrew libraries don't match. UTV uses the libraries from your Homebrew rather than bundling its own, so an incompatible Homebrew upgrade can stop it from loading (this is what broke 2026.9, #85). Instead of disappearing without a message, UTV now checks its libraries at launch and shows which one does not match and the command that fixes it, as a dialog when started from Finder, the Dock or open, and as a message when started from a terminal (#88, #89).
  • No more second UTV icon in the Dock at startup. The startup update check ran as a separate helper that macOS showed as a second UTV application for a few seconds (#90).
  • Fixed the launcher's terminal hint, which gave a wrong address for the Homebrew tap (#88).

Behind the scenes

  • A daily automated check now installs the current release from the Homebrew tap with that day's Homebrew libraries and verifies that it starts, so a Homebrew upgrade that breaks UTV is caught by us rather than by you (#88).

OpenUTV 2026.10

OpenUTV 2026.10 fixes the macOS startup failure in 2026.9, lowers the macOS requirement to macOS 15, and adds native HDR presentation on macOS, headless rendering on Linux, and HEIC export through the operating system's encoder.

macOS: 2026.9 no longer started after a Homebrew upgrade (#85)

Homebrew upgraded OpenColorIO from 2.5 to 2.6. OpenUTV uses the libraries from your Homebrew rather than bundling its own, so 2026.9, built against 2.5, stopped starting with no error message. 2026.10 is built against the current Homebrew libraries.

To upgrade:

brew update && brew upgrade --cask utv

If 2026.10 does not start, your Homebrew libraries are older than this release needs. Bring them up to date with brew update && brew upgrade.

macOS

  • macOS 15 Sequoia and later are now supported; earlier releases required the macOS version they were built on (#61, #62).
  • Native HDR and 10-bit presentation through Metal: 10-bit SDR, EDR (extended dynamic range), and HDR PQ / HLG modes, selectable in Preferences (#69). See docs/testing/macos-edr.md.
  • HEIC / HEIF export uses Apple's encoder through ImageIO, 10-bit for sources deeper than 8 bits (#81, #84).

Windows

  • Fixed a startup loop where the viewer relaunched itself repeatedly after installing with a newer installer over an older release (#73, #74, #75).
  • Fixed image export through OpenImageIO, and the list of writable formats now reflects what OpenImageIO can write (#58, #59, #63).
  • HEIC / HEIF export through the Windows Imaging Component, using Microsoft's "HEIF Image Extensions" and "HEVC Video Extensions" from the Microsoft Store. Without them the export reports what to install (#81, #84).
  • Installer: -Version dev-build installs the development pre-release, and -ZipPath installs from a zip on disk (#86).

Linux

  • Headless rendering: utvio / rvio no longer needs an X server. Without a display it renders through EGL, on the GPU when there is one and with Mesa software rendering otherwise. utvio_sw / rvio_sw force software rendering (#82). See docs/headless-rendering.md.
  • Fixed the command line tools not starting because of the library path, and Homebrew's Mesa replacing the system GPU driver (#66, #68, #76).
  • The release tarball requires glibc 2.38 and does not run on RHEL 8 / 9 yet (#83).

All platforms

  • HEIC / HEIF and AVIF are listed as writable only when an encoder is really available (#79, #84). OpenUTV does not ship an HEVC encoder.
  • Fixed an intermittent crash on exit in the media library (#64).
  • New automated tests run the command line tools and round-trip every writable image format on macOS, Windows and Linux for each build (#60, #64).

  • Streamlined UI: Grouped all RED controls under Image > RED, featuring a top-level GPU Acceleration toggle alongside wavelet debayering resolution selections (Full, Half, Quarter, Eighth).
  • User Library Search Paths: Added automatic lookup for RED redistributable libraries in standard user configuration directories:
    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/OpenUTV/RED
    • Linux: ~/.local/share/openutv/red
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\OpenUTV\RED
  • Diagnostic & Version Handshake Probing: Probes RED library version headers and provides clear user notifications on version mismatches (such as R3D SDK 9.2.1 vs. an external 9.3.0 RED PLAYER installation).

Core Stability & Session Loading

  • Session File Loading: Fixed a crash regression when loading saved .rv session files (#39, #42).
  • Shader Linking: Resolved GLSL shader linking regressions.
  • UI Reentrancy Guards: Wrapped session manager checkbox states to eliminate Qt 6 reentrancy crashes and menu flashing.

Linux & Windows Platform Modernization

  • Linux Build & Runtime Modernization: Linux builds now utilize Homebrew dependencies, the ultra-fast mold linker, and x86-64-v3 compiler optimizations for higher playback throughput (#43).
  • Windows Build & Caching: Streamlined Windows compilation with cached MSVC environments and >99% ccache hit rates (#45).
  • Archive Structure: Fixed package compression to prevent redundant root folder nesting when extracting macOS (ditto), Windows, and Linux standalone archives (#49).
